Sonos has launched its first in-house music streaming service: Sonos Radio, a digital streaming radio service including the existing radio stations from iHeartRadio and TuneIn, as well as its own original programs via three new products consisting of two ad-free offerings and one ad-supported option.
The original streaming options feature the ad-free single station hosted by Sonos itself – Sonos Sound System, which will play new and well-known music, snippets of stories from artists about their music, and hours guest-hosted by select artists themselves. Sonos said that this is all about mixxing crowd-pleasers with the occasional songs that you may have missed, to create a single stream that is going to have broad appeal.
There is also Artist Stations, which are also ad-free, hand-curated by artists, and include a songs selection that they love or have inspired them. The first station of this kind, debuting with the Sonos Radio launch, is ‘In the Absence Thereof…’ of Thom Yorke and there are much more to enjoy in the coming weeks, such as stations from David Byrne, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, and more.
The final component of the Sonos streaming content is Sonos Stations, including more than 30 dedicated genre stations, which are also free but ad-supported. Therefore, sometimes you will hear the promotional message throughout the stream.
Sonos has strictly acted as an integrator for the others’ services, operating the platform layer in order to provide in-house, multi-room streaming through its Sonos speaker as well as audio equipment products. It’s a big change since this marks its first foray of doing something on the services. “
At launch, the worldwide radio option backed by TuneIn and iHeartRadio will be globally available, but the original products of Sonos Radio will only be available in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and Ireland with the company’s plan to expand availability in future. Its in-house services are powered by a deal with Napster in order to use their streaming catalog. However, Sonos is working on signing up more streaming licensing partners to have an expanded geographic footprint and catalogue size.
